The political divide: Breaking barriers to women’s leadership
Gender equality04.04.2025

As part of our micro-series on key data points from the groundbreaking What Women Want survey, presented at The Women’s Summit in October 2024 in partnership with She, Her, Hers, we’re spotlighting the complex realities shaping women’s lives today. These articles break down the data, tell the stories behind the numbers, and outline where change is most needed.
Our research exposed a glaring disparity in political ambition. Men are twice as likely as women to consider running for office. While women lead in their communities and industries, they face systemic barriers that hinder their paths to formal leadership.
Key Insights from the Data:
- Men are twice as likely to express political ambition compared to women.
- Household responsibilities, lack of mentorship, and emotional labour were cited as major barriers to entering public life.
Why This Matters:
Representation isn’t just symbolic – it drives change. Women leaders bring diverse perspectives to the table, challenging outdated policies and fostering inclusive decision-making. When women’s voices are absent, so is progress. Their lived experiences often lead to more comprehensive approaches on issues like healthcare, education, family policy, and gender equity – policies that directly impact the lives of women, children, and marginalized communities.
The lack of women in politics also means fewer role models for future generations, reinforcing the misconception that politics is a male-dominated space. This perpetuates systemic barriers, making it even harder for women to enter and influence the political sphere.
What’s next:
- For advocacy groups: Provide mentorship and training programs to prepare women for public roles.
- For policymakers: Create funding and resources to support women running for office.
- For communities: Support and elevate women leaders in local initiatives to build confidence and visibility.
