A must-have kitchen tool

We have a doozy for you this week, because not only will this amazing kitchen tool add healthy, fresh, deliciousness to your cooking … it will also help you deal with the all-too-familiar midsummer zucchini glut which leads to your mom, sister, neighbour or friend first offering, then begging you to please take some zucchini off their hands.

Get a spiralizer and say yes! Zucchini loaf is no longer your only option. When spiralized, zucchini has the perfect texture to work alongside – or replace – noodles in your favourite pasta and salad dishes.

In case you’re not familiar with the spiralizer, it’s a tool that lets you choose a blade and turn a handle (no power supply needed!) to cut vegetables and fruits into long, noodle-like strands or spiral shapes. Different blades produce different shapes and sizes of spirals.

It’s true zucchini is high in fibre and nutrients, and low in carbs, calories (and gluten-free), but there’s a long list of other foods that are great to spiralize, with just a few including:

  • Carrots
  • Cabbage
  • Cucumber
  • Squash
  • Parsnip
  • Beets
  • Apples (I could go on …)

I have the OXO Good Grips Tabletop Spiralizer in my cupboard. It’s inexpensive, easy to use, and lets me bring on the zucchini with no fear (which is good, since it’s the only thing that survives in my garden!).
